The Self
Pedant: one who makes a show of knowledge
Let's keep it interesting. An inquiry of art, language, literature, philosophy, politics--the humanities, yoga, organic foods, wine, cheese, ad infinitum...

Mototaxi Junket Race: a very interesting project that needs donations...
Upon Reflection: Can music really define a person's personality ?
As I was on my way to the beach with a new friend, she mentioned music is very important to her: that she can sense a great connection. That is, if you and her have the same taste in music, you're essentially cool. She didn't go on to say more like if you don't have the same taste as her, she doesn't like you anymore. But I would like to take this matter further as I thought her claim was a bit bizarre. How can music define a person's personality?
As I was thinking about it, I thought "great", this is why some people I know think I'm a snob since I love classical music. And then I thought: there are people out there who actually enjoy Brittney Spears. Need I say more?
No seriously, while I don't think that music defines a person's entire personality it does define a bit of it. For example, I might go on to say that you really don't have great taste in music. Thus, if you like Spears, I might judge you, but I might still like other bits of your personality.
All in all, it is a strange claim indeed: to say that music defines a person's personality. I could not help to stop pondering this conversation. In fact, I found it to be a bit silly, really. But in the end, music sort of does define our personalities--to what extent? Not sure; but I don't think that it is grave. One might say, that I like classical music because I appreciate the constructional aspects of making a beautiful harmony whilst using a variety of instruments, or simply, using one instrument. Hence, I admire musical talent. Or one might like punk because they are political, and thus he's probably has some interesting political views to be discussed etc.
But I really don't see why anyone would like Spears, like at all. Some people say she is a great performer but I will say: Just don't play your Brittney Spears at my house.

A Stranger in Bordeaux: The Bread
Everyday between 6PM and 7PM I pick up bread at the nearest boulangerie for my bf and I. Lately, I'm constantly afraid that I might forget, which then my bf will be mad at me. It's like he turns into the incredible hulk, or a werewolf when we have no bread. The meal is not complete, and he gives me the typical french condescending stares proceeded with remarks: "How could have you forgotten the bread!" or "You should be ashamed of yourself!" I feel like I should be grounded or put in the corner. I feel ashamed.
It's like committing the ultimate sin. It's the "deal-breaker". And you don't want to tick off the relationship by not "getting any tonight". No bread, no sex.

Animal Rights?
I love animals. I don't really eat them anymore. In fact I was a quasi-borderline vegan that I vaguely ate any dairy products let alone meat.
But now I live in France...
So now I consider myself a vegetarian who adapts. What can I say the meat and dairy quality is far from dubious as it is in the USA. Thus I am not that scared to eat it on that principle.
But why should I care about animal rights? I am trying to postulate philosophical reasons why eating animal flesh is wrong. I do get grossed out from time to time. When I do eat meat, I really try not to think about flesh and blood and ugh. But it is getting very hard for me. The very idea of eating meat is very bizarre to me now.
But what rights to animals have? I just can't grasp this concept.
